We pride ourselves on the meticulous breeding of true Boa sigma, with a specific focus on the stunning leopard and hypo morphs. The red-tail boa clade has undergone several revisions with the introduction of new genetic data. Historically, these boas were all classified as subspecies of one another. However, we now recognize five distinct species: Boa constrictor, Boa imperator, Boa sigma, Boa nebulosa, and Boa orophias.

In the reptile hobby, most boas are commonly referred to using acronyms such as BCC (Boa constrictor constrictor) and BCI (Boa imperator). In the past, Boa sigma was often grouped under “BCI,” which led to the creation of hybrids that are neither true Boa imperator nor true Boa sigma. We take great care in researching lineage and inspecting our animals for species purity, ensuring our customers receive authentic Sonoran boas while helping preserve the genetic integrity of the species.

One of the defining traits of Boa sigma is its smaller adult size. These boas rarely exceed five feet in length, yet they retain the strength and girth typical of larger boas—resulting in a compact but powerful animal comparable in size to a ball python. Many individuals also develop striking red coloration along their bodies, which often deepens with each shed.

Additionally, the distinctive “leopard” phenotype—characterized by broken, rounded dorsal patterns—originated in Boa sigma and has since been introduced into both Boa constrictor (BCC) and Boa imperator (BCI).
Because of this, any boa exhibiting the leopard phenotype likely has Boa sigma somewhere in its lineage. For this reason, it is crucial to verify the lineage of any animal marketed as a true Sonoran boa, as many lines have been mixed with other species to introduce the leopard trait.
